EU grants for entrepreneurs for the registration of trademarks and industrial designs 2022

As part of the Fund for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs)

On January 10, the European Commission and the European Intellectual Property Office (EUiPO) announced another edition of the trademark, industrial design and invention application funding program, which aims to help small and medium-sized enterprises during the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, EUR 47 million has been allocated for it.

What does SME offer?

– refund of 90% of fees related to trademark examinations for distinctive character and patent applications for innovation;

– refund of 75% of fees charged by intellectual property offices (including EUIPO and UPRP when registering trademarks and designs);

– 50% refund when registering a trademark outside the EU (by the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO);

– refund of 50% of the fees charged by national industrial property offices for patent registration;

– subsidies are granted in the form of vouchers valid for 4 months.

The maximum amount of support for a trademark or industrial design application is EUR 1,500.

Who can join the program?

Enterprises employing up to 250 people and whose total turnover does not exceed EUR 50 million or whose balance sheet total does not exceed EUR 43 million.

When can applications be submitted?

from January 10, 2022 to December 16, 2022 or until funds are exhausted (first come, first served basis)

Grant application procedure:

1. The applicant should prepare:

– Company bank account statement containing: company name as account holder, full IBAN number with country code and BIC/SWIFT code.

– VAT certificate or national registration number certificate issued by the relevant national authority.

– if the company is represented by a proxy, a “Declaration” (template) signed by an authorized owner or employee of the company must be submitted.

(All files should be scanned and saved in PDF format)

2. Creating an account on the fund portal https://euipo.europa.eu/sme-fund/pl/user/login
3. Filling in the application for funding
4. Assessment of the application by the EUIPO (10 working days)
5. After a positive decision on the application, the applicant receives a voucher that entitles them to a refund of the application costs (the voucher is valid for 4 months)
6. Filing a trademark/industrial design/patent application and requesting a refund of fees
7. The costs are refunded within one month of submitting the application
